Do you know what my favorite renewable fuel is? An ecosystem for innovation.

Thomas Friedman

If you were to ask the average person to guess which car company manufactures the most electric cars worldwide, chances are they would guess wrong. No, it is not the company which gets all the press (and which, incidentally, also makes rocket ships). In reality it’s Nissan Motor Co., in partnership with Renault and Mitsubishi. Introduced way back in 2010, the Nissan LEAF remains the world’s all-time best selling highway-capable plug-in electric vehicle, with almost 400,000 units sold—and far outpacing sales of equivalent EVs from Tesla, Inc. And that is just one of their EV models. Their aim is to become the leader in zero-emission transportation; and so far, they are succeeding.

Clearly, if there’s one thing Nissan is known for, it is the company’s ability to innovate. Indeed, that very word is part of their official corporate slogan: “Innovation that excites.” Ever since it was founded in 1928 by Yoshisuke Aikawa, new ideas and fresh thinking have continuously impelled the company’s progress. This drive to innovate applies not only to their electric battery and powertrain technologies, but to other key aspects of automotive engineering and design as well, such as:

  • XTRONIC Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), a computer software system that uses dynamic inputs like vehicle speed and accelerator pedal position to determine the ideal gear ratio needed to provide smooth, constant acceleration
  • ProPILOT Assist, an advanced hands-on driving assistant designed to help drivers avoid collisions during both long highway trips and stop-and-go traffic commutes
  • Safety Shield, a suite of technologies that take a comprehensive automatic approach to on-the-road monitoring of, and vehicle response to, potential hazards in order to protect both driver and passengers

A: Primarily what sets Nissan Motors apart from the pack is its focus on electric vehicles. Currently Nissan is the world’s largest manufacturer of highway-capable EV cars, selling in some 50 markets and boasting annual global sales of all-electric vehicles in the hundreds of thousands. The company’s top-selling EV is the Nissan LEAF, introduced in 2010 as the world’s first mass-market all-electric car.

A: Possibly. The company recently unveiled a new, still unnamed experimental electric car with a twin-motor powertrain, all-wheel drive, and four-corner traction featuring a pair of electric motors at each axle. They have also announced that starting with the 2021 model year all vehicles sold under the Infiniti brand name will use either all-electric or hybrid fuel systems.

A: Yes. Nissan also manufactures a variety of gasoline, gas–electric hybrid, and diesel-fueled vehicles, including sedans, SUVs and crossovers, trucks, and sports cars, such as the Altima, Sentra, Versa, Pathfinder, Rogue, Frontier, and Titan models.

A: Apparently not. When tested for both crashworthiness (how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash) and crash-avoidance and mitigation (technology that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity), Nissan models in recent years that have scored high or been named top safety picks by the IIHS have included the LEAF, Kicks, Altima, Maxima, Rogue, and Pathfinder, among others.

A: The number one reason would be you and your family’s well-being. Nissan’s Safety Shield® Technologies rely on sophisticated sensors, radars, and cameras located throughout the vehicle to function properly. Therefore, it is imperative that your vehicle be serviced and recalibrated to manufacturer specifications by skilled and trained professionals after a collision. Post-repair scanning is required to ensure that all built-in safety and Nissan Intelligent Driving systems are working following any repairs, however minor. The service technicians at a Nissan-certified auto body shop like Keri Coach Works will deliver the exceptional repair experience required to return your vehicle to like-new condition and manufacturer safety specs. We meet or exceed Nissan’s own standards for repair work, training, equipment, and delivery of customer service. For a timely, high-quality repair, always choose a Nissan Certified Collision Center like Keri Coach Works.

It almost goes without saying that Nissan’s well-earned reputation for innovation extends as well to the area of auto body design, construction, and repair. With Nissan’s Zone Body Construction, every individual Nissan part works together as part of an integrated “ecosystem” to help ensure the safety of the car’s occupants. In this type of design, the car is effectively divided into two “zones”:

  • a hard safety zone, including front and rear doors fitted with guard bars, that protects the passengers sitting inside a high-strength cabin; and
  • a soft crushable zone that absorbs much of the impact energy of a crash, diverting it away from passengers (see our recent blog on “The Physics of Car Crashes” ).

It also goes without saying that such an advanced type of car is decidedly not your granddad’s Oldsmobile! Thus, a general mechanic (such as you might find in a typical, traditional body shop), however skilled or experienced, simply does not possess the deeper knowledge and expertise to understand—much less repair—such a complex amalgam of advanced interacting technologies. The mom in the “Nissan Certified Collision Experience” video below puts it best when she says:

Cars are so complex, especially with the new safety systems they use. You need experts with Nissan training to fix it right.

Despite all their advanced safety features, however, no modern car is 100% immune to the occasional scratch, dent, or more serious collision damage. In the event of an accident, you can rely on our team of capable I-CAR trained and certified body repair technicians at Keri Coach Works to restore your damaged Nissan vehicle to good-as-new condition; and, more importantly, using genuine Nissan parts, they will maintain the car’s future crash-worthiness.

Keri Coach’s I-CAR Gold Class Professionals designation ensures that our shop has the right tools and our technicians have undergone the rigorous education and training required to provide customers with efficient, safe, and high-quality auto body collision repairs.
